It looks like the big issue at the Council meeting will be Sunday sales -- that's right, your representatives may let liquor stores sell you a bottle of wine, a fifth of whiskey or a six-pack of brew on Sundays. Sharon Fearey has made it clear she supports it, but she won't be there Tuesday. And the rest of the Council has been as clear as a pint of Guinness stout on this issue. They say they have no hardline opinions and want to hear what everyone has to say -- although the absence of strong opinion says members are probably leaning toward voting in favor of it. Otherwise it probably would have been yanked off the agenda Friday. Which ever way it goes, a group of 6,701 registered Wichita voters could force the issue to a ballot with a valid petition. (For more, see The Eagle's story and voter poll.)
After the Sunday suds are voted up or down, the council will reopen its discussion on paving dirt roads. That's an issue that Council member Jim Skelton says the city needs to look at. He and the city's street engineers say many of the dirt roads remaining in the city may stay dirt forever if the city doesn't reduce what it costs homeowners to pave streets. There's no vote -- it's just something Skelton wants addressed publicly. It should be an interesting first full meeting under Mayor Carl Brewer and newly-elected District 5 Council member Jeff Longwell. And there's more than just booze and dirt roads...

Dirt roads and beer? Sounds like my wayward youth. Good times!
Will the bible thumpers try to stop Sunday sales like they work to stop public art and gambling? Let's hope they don't try to force their narrow minded religion on us for a third time.
I believe that every dirt road in the city limits must be paved! This isnt Iraq for goodsakes. It is embarrasing when we still have dirt roads in the city limits. fix them!
I am a bible thumper and proud of it. Yes I definitely will VOTE AGAINST liquor laws on Sunday. Isn't it enough that you non-bible thumpers drink yourselves stupid Monday through Saturday. Even if you don't reverence God, don't you think enough of yourself to give your body and mind a rest from that.

I gave my mind a full-time rest from religion and the morons who practice it--like yourself.
And when Sunday sales finally happen, I'll be drinking to the demise to the biggest lie man has ever known--belief in a God.

Go ahead and vote, churchie. You will lose.
Owned.
To both of those wonderful enlightening comments. Don't be mad at God for your foolishness or anybody else's. You can drink yourself silly as far as I am concerned, but there are enough alcoholics and drunk drivers without you two fools adding to the number.
The religious crackpots come out of the woodwork anytime they think they can dictate their morality to the rest of us.
Luckily we'll soon be able to go to the liquor store on Sundays.
And if they open at 11 a.m. I can beat the church crowd, because I'd rather be sharing the road with a bunch of drunkards than sunday bible thumpers.
Sunday bible thumpers drive worse than any group of people I've ever seen.
You are so foolish. It has nothing to do with dictation. Have it ever occured to you that we bible thumpers care what happens to you, no matter how idiotic you may be, and that the more alcohol that is available the more people will drink and be irresponsible and make stupid mistakes because it is under drunkard influence. But hey, like you said you are going to drink no matter what and as far as people who are bible thumpers and drink they are no better off than you are.

Why don't you move to IRAN? You'll probably fit in well there.
It's not about people buying booze on Sunday. It's about their right to buy it being restrained by religious bigots trying to sneak their backward Christian morality into state law that affects EVERYONE.
Church and state are supposed to be separate.
Stay the hell out of my liquor cabinet, out of my life, and out of my government.
I'm concerned what happens to Bible thumpers so I think churches should be closed on Sundays to prevent any mental damage. Look what happened to Dennis Rader and Ted Haggard.
You are right. I will stay out of your drunken business. Farewell and die soon.
